THE LINE
Oak woodland with a working past.
The recorded loop leaves the northern edge of Tomies Wood and climbs gradually beneath the trees. It reaches its high point on the southern side before dropping towards O’Sullivan’s Cascade, then turns back through the woods with glimpses across Lough Leane. The modest height gain and broad tracks make this one of the more approachable walks on Slí Kerry.
The wood is younger than it looks. A study of Irish oak populations by Muir and colleagues in 2004 cites historical records of Tomies being felled and replanted at the beginning of the nineteenth century. What stands on the lower slopes now is sessile oak: a wood that came back, rather than one that was never touched.
Out on the water, in view from the wood, is Innisfallen, the most important monastic site in the Killarney valley, and the Annals of Innisfallen carry its name. Ross Castle stands across on its own peninsula.
